Hello Scouters,
We are off to a great start! There is still much to do, but don't miss out on the fun. There are many choices of events coming up that are not only just plain fun, but also most events help your son complete various requirements and achievements in his rank advancement. Take advantage of events whenever possible in order to maximize family-time as well as help your son achieve his scout goals. Here's what's coming up:
Friday - No meeting
Saturday - Some of us are camping at Bovay Scout Ranch. It's awesome!
Saturday - Some of you are going to the Texas Adopt-A-Beach Event. This is a great opportunity to participate in a conservation event which helps your son earn the World Conservation Badge.
Saturday - If you aren't doing something already, then try attending the Raven Fishing Derby at Gene's Polaris on I-10 East. Details below.
Like I said...lots of choices and that's only the beginning! October will offer more events and I'm working on scheduling a camping trip by popular demand.
Remember to spend time helping your son complete the "Bobcat Trail" in his handbook. It is not hard, but takes a little time to help your son learn the steps. The Bobcat Trail must be earned first before he can start doing the rest of his rank handbook. Help him out!
Lastly, although we are not meeting this Friday night, I will be at the church from 6:30pm to 7:00pm anyway for different reasons. If you need to finish paying or finish paperwork, please stop by and let's finish it up. I plan to submit all completed forms and payments on Monday morning to the council which will make your sons official members of Boy Scouts of America. I will TRY very hard to have more handbooks for sale as well. I know many of you want Wolf books and others.

The Cub Scouts Program is part of Boy Scouts of America. Our unit is in the Raven District and Sam Houston Area Council. We have proudly served the North Channel Community since 2003. We accept registrations for boys in the 1st grade through 5th grade all year long. Seven years and going strong!

PARENTS: HOW TO MAKE AWARD REQUESTS
Please help your Den Advancement Chairman by submitting your awards requests in this format and within these guidelines:

* All requests must be in writing as follows: Complete Name of Scout, complete name of award, the full date of when the award was earned, ex: mm/dd/yyyy. Attach any required documents.

MORE SCOUT EDUCATION
Many museums, parks, private companies and even the Houston Zoo offer classes to Scouts. Check out their online calendars! From personal experience, these classes are usually very affordable, lots of fun for the Scouts and seriously educational in a cool way for boys. By attending these classes, scouts are almost always able to earn beltloops, pins and additional badges. Here are a couple of links for The Houston Museum of Natural Science and The Musuem of Health and Medical Science. You can also find classes at Moody Gardens and other sources around town. Try them out!

CUB SCOUT FUNDRAISING ACCOUNTS
"Cub Scout Fundraising Accounts" is a Benefit that Pack 515 offers to our Scouts and their Families. This is a summary of guidelines. If you have questions, please see the Treasurer or Committee Chairman.
The purpose of providing this Benefit is so that Scouts help "Pay Their Own Way" as is taught in the Scouting Program. By providing this incentive, a Scout is able to help raise funds not only for the Pack, but also for his own needs. The funds in a Scout Account are strictly intended to help him pay for Scout necessities, such as uniforms, camping equipment, council and pack fees. We also allow that the funds be used to pay for Pack, District and Council Scout fees. In some cases, the funds may be used to pay for family member fees and needs as well. Scout Account Funds are NOT intended to pay for articles, objects and other things that are not necessities. This benefit has been provided for many years with few changes. We have found it to work quite well for all involved. We are proud to be able to continue offering it to our Scout Families.
It is important that each family understand that all money raised for a fundraiser is done so with the purpose of raising funds for the Pack. The Pack has chosen to share the profits with the boys by having Cub Scout Accounts. We gladly share this money, which at all times actually belongs to the Pack. Should a Scout decide to quit Scouting or transfer, the funds remain with Pack 515.
* Each Scout who participates in our fundraisers will have a Scout Account set up and managed by the Pack Treasurer.
* The profits of a fundraiser will be shared with the scouts.
* Breakdown of sharing: Each Scout will have an individual profit from each fundraiser based on his participation and sales. Based on is individual profit, 10% of the whole amount profit will be shared to the church. Of the remaining profit amount, 50 % of the profit will be shared to the Pack Account, 50 % will be shared to the Scout Account.
* Scout Account money is accessed by presenting valid receipts no older than two weeks from purchase or event. The Treasurer will provide a check reimbursement for the receipt(s). The Treasurer will provide reimbursement within one week of request unless under extenuating circumstances.
* The funds from a Scout Account are available for use under these conditions: (1) The Scout must be ACTIVELY participating in the Pack. (2) The Scout may not be absent more than twice prior to a receipt reimbursement request. (3) Receipts should be submitted one at a time if possible. At no time should receipts be "saved up" and presented all at once preventing the Treasurer from proper time to review and request any necessary approvals. (4) If you are making a store purchase, please separate personal items from your scout purchase. A Scout purchase receipt should only show the specific scout items that need reimbursing. (5) Scout Account funds are not transferable. They may only be used for the Scout who did the fundraising. (6) These accounts are a privilege with a specific purpose to help our Scouts and their families. The accounts are not personal bank accounts in which a family can use to pay for any item(s) they like. Please respect this goal and do not abuse the program. We can only offer it as long as it is not abused. Scout Accounts are available throughout a Scout's active tenure with Pack 515. These funds are actually Pack funds which are being shared with the scout; therefore, if a scout transfers to another Pack the scout funds do not transfer out, they remain with pack 515. In cases where a Webelos Scout graduates into an Active Boy Scout Troop, the funds may be transferred to the Troop after active participation is established. This may take up to two months of active and consistent participation in the troop.
